In the last two blogs, we’ve featured the fantastic artists from our “IMPRESSED: Print, Paint, Dye, Repeat” exhibition, on display through January 22, 2023. Our featured artists helped turn Artsville Collective’s gallery at Marquee into a holiday shop full of reasonably priced, handmade treasures. So far, we’ve featured artists that create from the heart, for the home, and today, we’re featuring two artists that make art for the family; Daryl Slaton and Leo Monahan.
Daryl Slaton
Still have holiday shopping to do? Asheville artist Daryl Slaton has you covered. Daryl has introduced his new holiday collection of prints, boxed cards, and mugs that animate to Artsville’s holiday shop. By using a free app on your phone, you can bring his whimsical characters to life, revealing a charming storyline with a background of holiday tunes. In a podcast episode with our partners at NOT REAL ART, Daryl Slaton said, “I always try to remain childlike, not childish, but I try to keep that childlike wonder of the world around [me] and always look for humor.” (Did you miss Daryl’s podcast episode? Leo Monahan
Leo Monahan’s career is an inspiring one for every artist out there. While attending college at Chouinard Art Institute, Leo received the first ever Disney scholarship offered by Walt Disney, and was awarded the scholarship every year of his college career. He went on to work for Disney for 50 years. Now, at Artsville Collective he’s showing his humorous take on confabulated creatures through his imaginative paper sculpture series Pun Fried Fish. These fun paper pieces are sure to delight the family and bring a little bit of that Disney charm.

We’re reflecting on a year of supporting the arts in Asheville, and we can’t help but feel thankful for our community. We focused on highlighting emerging and mid-career artists to give them confidence, marketing, press, and a place to show their work, so they can continue doing what they love. One of our featured artists, Betsy Meyer, went on to show her work at the Raleigh Fine Arts Society: 2022 North Carolina Artists Exhibition after showing with us in the summer of 2022. Jim McDowell; “The Black Potter,” another Artsville featured artist, was featured in The Laurel of Asheville while showing his work with us.
We also changed our name from Sand Hill Artists Collective to Artsville Collective, as we plan to move towards extending our reach nationally. If you’ve been with us from the beginning of SHAC, which started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, thank you for going on this journey with us.
Finally, thanks for your support during 2022, and stay tuned for our big plans in 2023! If you’re interested in working with us, please reach out: we’d love to hear from you.
